What to recite after the prayer

Sahih Muslim records that the Prophet, peace be upon him, asked Allah for forgiveness three times when he made the taslim. He then said Allahumma antas-salam. The tasbih comes after that opening, not instead of it.

The guided routine below keeps the four counted steps people most often need a counter for. The other phrases are written out so you can say them once, without pretending every line is a hundred-count.

Arabic, meaning, and counts

1. Istighfar

   أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ

   Astaghfirullah

   I seek Allah's forgiveness.

   Count: Three times

   Sahih Muslim, immediately after the taslim.

   Count this dhikr

2. Allahumma antas-salam

   اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ السَّلَامُ وَمِنْكَ السَّلَامُ

   Allahumma antas-salamu wa minkas-salam, tabarakta ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram

   O Allah, You are Peace and from You is peace. Blessed are You, Owner of majesty and honour.

   Count: Once

   Sahih Muslim

   Count this dhikr

3. The tasbih

   سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ · الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ · اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

   SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar

   Glory be to Allah. All praise is for Allah. Allah is the Greatest.

   Count: 33, then 33, then 34

   Sahih Muslim. Another narration gives 33 of each.

   Count this dhikr

4. The declaration after the hundred

   لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ

   La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah

   None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner.

   Count: Once

   Sahih Muslim, after completing the tasbih.

   Count this dhikr

5. Ayat al-Kursi

   اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ

   Ayat al-Kursi

   Recite the verse of the Throne once after the obligatory prayer.

   Count: Once

   Quran 2:255. Reported among the adhkar after the prayer.

   Count this dhikr

Start after salah dhikr

Step 1 is Astaghfirullah three times. The routine will not begin the next phrase until you have finished the taps yourself.
