Dhikr Before Sleep

Bedtime remembrance from Sahih al-Bukhari: a verse to recite in full, the close of Al-Baqarah, a counted tasbih, and one short dua as you lie down.

What belongs to the night

Evening adhkar close the afternoon and the early night. Bedtime adhkar are said when you are actually going to sleep. They are shorter in number of phrases and heavier in recitation, because Ayat al-Kursi and the end of Al-Baqarah are read, not tapped through as single words.

On the counter, a target of one means: finish the recitation, then tap once so the routine can move. It is not an invitation to repeat the verse a hundred times.

Bedtime routine

Before Sleep

Step 1 of 6

Allahu la ilaha illa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyum...

Allah — there is no god except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.

Frequently asked questions

Is the bedtime tasbih the same as the one after salah?

The numbers match a familiar pattern, but the setting is different. The bedtime report is the one given to Ali and Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with them.

What if I fall asleep before the end?

Recite Ayat al-Kursi and the sleep dua if those are all you can manage. Continue the rest when you are safe to stay awake.
